Chiara Guerrasio is the second child in a family from Gioia Tauro. Like her 15-year-old contemporaries, she goes to school, works out at the gym, and has fun with her friends. When her father Claudio departs without notice on a long business trip, Chiara begins to investigate his reasons for leaving Gioia Tauro and discovers a hidden side of her family that leads her to reflect on herself and her expectations for the future. Jonas Carpignano’s third feature film, A Chiara ends the director’s Calabrian trilogy with the portrait of a teenager in conflict between a deep sense of belonging to the world of her affections and the search for her own identity. The film demonstrates the anti-rhetorical but highly immersive and poetic
narrative construction distinctive of the director’s style. It won the Europa Cinema Label at the Cannes Film Festival’s Directors’ Fortnight in 2021, while the magnetic performance given by Swamy Rotolo as Chiara won her the Best Actress prize at the David di Donatello awards in 2022.
