Sixteen-year-old Marieme (Karidja Touré) lives in a working-class area of Paris with two younger sisters, an assertive brother, and an absent mother. Weighed down by her difficult family situation and sidelined at school, she joins a group of three free-spirited girls with whom she begins to experience a new, carefree youth.
Following the extraordinary success of Tomboy, Céline Sciamma returned to the big screen with a portrait of a young girl attempting to build her own identity. With extraordinary sensitivity and energy, this intimate and delicate portrait illustrates a difficult formative process with emphasis on issues of power, gender, and emancipation.
The opening film at the Directors’ Fortnight at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, Girlhood received four César nominations and was a finalist for the European Parliament’s Lux Prize.
