Grizzly Man is a portrait of Timothy Treadwell, an animal rights activist who studied the behavior of grizzly bears in Alaska for thirteen years, constantly exposing himself to danger, before he and his partner Amie Huguenard were both killed by one. Composed of Treadwell’s own footage, interviews with rescuers, ecologists, and scholars, and the unmistakable voice of Herzog himself, Grizzly Man is a fascinating and mysterious film that has entered the history of documentary cinema due to the explosive power of an extraordinary story and the empathic portrait of a character who shared characteristics with many of Herzog’s heroes. Selected for the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award, and nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary, Grizzly Man is one of Werner Herzog’s most emblematic works.
