In I Am Not Your Negro director Raoul Peck re-imagines and completes Remember this House, the unfinished work of the civil rights activist of African-American people James Baldwin. Using fragments and quotations from the original book, the documentary, narrated by the voice of actor Samuel L. Jackson, explores the history of racism in the United States through Baldwin’s reminiscences of civil rights leaders Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King, Jr, as well as his personal observations of American history.

The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary in 2017 and won in the same category at the 2018 BAFTAs. Raoul Peck, Haitian director, former minister of culture in his country, finds in James Baldwin a cultural reference to be able to connect the identity of the modern history of the United States to his own painful and bloody legacy, slavery. For the director: “James Baldwin has never finished Remember this House and the ambition of this film is to partially fill this void”.
