At the age of twenty, Hiam Abbass left Deir Hanna, her native village in Palestine, to pursue her dream of becoming an actress in Europe. Thirty years later, her daughter and filmmaker Lina returns to her home village, investigating her exile and how the women in her family influenced their lives. Family footage, archive materials and pictures compose a vibrant portrait of four generations of Palestinian women who keep their history alive through the strength of bonds.
Presented at Giornate degli Autori during the last Venice Film Festival, at the Toronto International Film Festival and nominated to represent Palestine at the Oscars, Lina Soualem’s second feature is a personal investigation that explores the meaning of inheritance and the transmission of family values. An intimate and touching documentary about belonging, memory and courage, it touches on crucial issues such as exile, dispossession and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, telling the story of a people from a small family affair.
