Synopsis
The lady Evelyn Mulwray hires private eye Jake Gittes to follow her husband, Hollis Mulwray, an engineer with the water department. After having caught and photographed the man together with a girl, Gittes is contacted by the real Mrs. Mulwray and realizes he’s been duped. Soon thereafter Hollis is discovered drowned in a fresh water reservoir. Suspecting murder, Gittes begins investigating the death on his own and discovers that Hollis fought the construction of a dam in that valley and the speculative building practices of his ex-partner Noah Cross, who is Evelyn’s father. After sneaking into the water facility to snoop around, Gittes is beaten by a bunch of thugs and has to run into Evelyn’s arms in order to escape, even though he is suspicious of her, too. He forces her to tell him the truth about her husband’s lover and uncovers a shady tale of incest.
