Synopsis
Warsaw, 01 September 1939. Jewish pianist Władysław Szpilman, forced to conform to race laws and move into the ghetto, escapes deportation with help from a guard and runs away after being put into forced labor. Hidden in an apartment by some friends, he watches the insurrection of Warsaw, powerless to do anything about it. He changes his hiding place but risks dying of hunger. He is discovered by a German official who, having learned of the man’s former profession, brings him to a room with a piano and invites Szpilman to play. The official is struck by the pianist’s performance and decides to help him, feeding him for months until the Germans are forced to abandon the city in the face of the Russian onslaught. With the war over, Szpilman returns to his art, while the official dies in a Soviet prison camp.
