Mamma Roma, a prostitute determined to leave her profession, welcomes the opportunity to marry Carmine, her pimp, to begin a new life. She rekindles her relationship with her son Ettore, who was sent away to grow up in the countryside, and buys a house on the outskirts of Rome where she is granted a stall in the neighborhood market. However, to Ettore his mother is a stranger and he negates her efforts to give him a better future. In the meantime, Carmine pressures her to return to prostitution by threatening to tell Ettore the truth about her. The young man has however already found out about his mother’s past and decides to give up working to become a petty thief, with fatal consequences.
