MARTIN EDEN
2019, 129′

Director: Pietro Marcello
Country: Italy, France, Germany
Language: v.o. Italian

Martin Eden, an uneducated sailor from humble origins, saves the young Arturo, the descendant of an aristocratic family, from a brawl. To thank him, Arturo takes him into his home where Martin meets Arturo’s family, friends, and sister Elena, with whom he falls in love. Freely adapted from Jack London’s novel of the same name, Pietro Marcello’s film tells the timeless story of Martin Eden, a young man consumed by the feeling that he has betrayed his origins, as he wins love through bourgeois culture. Inspired, bold, and powerful, the film won the Platform Prize for Best Film at the Toronto Film Festival in 2019, earned Maurizio Braucci and Pietro Marcello the David di Donatello for Best Non-Original Screenplay, and won Luca Marinelli the Best Actor prize at the Venice Film Festival.
