NOTTURNO
2020, 100′
Director: Gianfranco Rosi
Countries: Italy, France, Germany
Distributor: Rai Cinema
Language: OV Arab and Kurd with Italian subtitles
Filmed over a period of three years, Notturno relates the story of everyday life behind the tragedy of civil wars, vicious dictatorships, invasions, and foreign intervention on the borders between Iraq, Kurdistan, Syria, and Lebanon―different stories on which the narrative confers a unity that transcends geographical divisions. Presented in the competition at the 2020 Venice Film Festival, Notturno is a personal and touching film that considers war in the Middle East without portraying the conflict. It is “a political film that doesn’t want to grapple with the political issue,” in the words of the director, who has taken extreme care in his formal presentation with the help of his editor, Jacopo Quadri, and cameraman, Luca Bigazzi.
