Anna Battista (Asia Argento), a successful actress, leads a life marked by excess, addiction, fleeting encounters, and constant escapes between Europe and the United States. Surrounded by fans yet profoundly alone, she moves through film sets, hotel rooms, and unruly nights without ever finding real balance. Her meeting with Kirk (Jean Shepard), an Australian musician, opens an unexpected breach: for the first time, Anna glimpses the possibility of a different life.
Presented twenty-five years ago at the Toronto International Film Festival, Scarlet Diva is the disruptive feature debut of actress and director Asia Argento. Blending thriller, drama, and erotic cinema, Argento crafts a layered and complex film that openly critiques the entertainment industry and tackles, without filters, themes such as abuse of power and the violence of the male gaze. The result is a free, personal, and daring work: a journey into the inner world of a restless and vulnerable female character that highlights the full extent of the Italian director’s auteur sensibility and offers viewers an intense and unpredictable experience.
