The #KR focus, in collaboration with the Visions du Réel festival, pays tribute to the work of Kelly Reichardt, a filmmaker known for her minimalist and anti-spectacular aesthetic, and widely recognized as one of the most authoritative and original voices in American auteur cinema.
On Friday, 24 April, the director will meet the audience at Cinema Godard for a masterclass retracing her career, moderated by Paolo Moretti.
BIOGRAPHY
Born in Miami in 1964, Kelly Reichardt is one of the most authoritative and original voices in American independent cinema. She made her debut with River of Grass, presented at the Sundance Film Festival and the Berlin Film Festival in 1994, immediately establishing herself with an intimate and understated style. After a period of experimentation in short formats, she returned to feature filmmaking with Old Joy (2006), embarking on a path that has been widely acclaimed at major international festivals, including Cannes, Venice, and Berlin. Her films, from Wendy and Lucy (2008) to First Cow (2019) and Showing Up (2022), explore characters living on the margins of society, portraying with sensitivity and formal rigor the fragilities and contradictions of contemporary America. Her work has been celebrated in numerous international retrospectives hosted by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Anthology Film Archives in New York, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles. The Mastermind, presented in competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, is her most recent feature film.
