Beginning with her directorial debut The Virgin Suicides (1999), the American filmmaker has explored adolescence and the female universe through a deeply personal and sensitive gaze, creating unforgettable generational portraits. After winning the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and three Golden Globes for Lost in Translation (2003), in 2006 she directed Marie Antoinette, a contemporary and unconventional reinterpretation of the life of the famous French queen. In 2010 she won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for Somewhere, a delicate portrait of the relationship between a father and daughter in contemporary Hollywood. In the years that followed, she directed The Bling Ring (2013), The Beguiled (2017), with which she became the second woman in history to win the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival, On the Rocks (2020), and Priscilla, which earned Cailee Spaeny the Volpi Cup for Best Actress in 2023. In 2025 she premiered the documentary Marc by Sofia, dedicated to fashion designer and longtime friend Marc Jacobs, at the Venice Film Festival.
