The film is a portrait of a group of people who have made their home on a former military base, 190 kilometers from Los Angeles and 40 meters below sea level. Without running water, electricity, law or government, the lives of these men and women are extremely hard but they do not want to return to civilization.
Gianfranco Rosi spent four years in this anarchist community making a sensitive, powerful, inspired, and visually powerful collective portrait about freedom, hope, and humanity. Rosi’s first feature film, Below Sea Level was shown at the 2008 Venice Film Festival, where it won the award for best documentary.
