Fondazione Prada presents the first retrospective dedicated to American artist David Smith (Decatur, Indiana, 1906 – Bennington, Vermont, 1965) since Smith’s 1962 exhibition project at the Teatro Romano in Spoleto.
Alongside his paintings, following the artist’s fundamental experiences at the Studebaker metalworking workshops in South Bend, Smith developed an interest in metals and industrial processes that led him to elaborate large-size sculptures, many of which were painted with brilliant colors. An exponent of the New York avant-garde, Smith created works marked by a strong expressive and symbolic sensibility, utilizing mechanical components and industrial techniques like welding.
Curated by Candida Smith and Carmen Giménez, the exhibition displays works taken from both public and private collections, and includes 13 large-size sculptures and 24 mixed media drawings. The exhibition is accompanied by a series of photographs by Ugo Mulas, as well as autographed notebooks that detail Smith’s Italian experiences.
