Juliette, a young motherless girl, grows up in northern France with her father Raphaël, a veteran of the First World War. A lonely, dreamy soul, Juliette is ill-regarded by the village community and finds consolation in singing and poetry. One day, walking along the riverbank, she meets a sorceress who predicts that scarlet sails will one day carry her away. Juliette never ceases to believe in the prophecy.
Loosely based on the novel of the same name by the Russian author Aleksandr Grin, Pietro Marcello’s film tells a story of female emancipation in an ancient world imbued with magical realism.
Opening film of the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival 2022.
