Fondazione Prada, in collaboration with Threes, presents the live performance “Organ” by American composer and organist Kali Malone t the Church of Santa Maria Annunciata in Chiesa Rossa, Milan.
The artist will feature a selection of tracks from her albums All Life Long and The Sacrificial Code, adapted for the organ of the church. Kali Malone composes and performs with a clarity of vision. Her music is built on evolving harmonic cycles, letting go of expectations for duration and breadth and offering a space for reflection and contemplation. Her experimental reinterpretations of centuries-old polyphonic compositional methods and historical tuning systems become portals to new ways of perceiving harmony, structure, and introspection.
As stated by Malone, “All messages have their own unique way of being communicated through music. Every decision in the sound is a form of communication. Sometimes words are limiting. Sometimes words are necessary. If the message succeeds in being communicated through the music, there is no privacy remaining regardless of the use of language.”
The Sacrificial Code, Kali Malone’s first organ album released in 2019, came to life during her studies in electroacoustic composition at The Royal College of Music in Stockholm. Through an apprenticeship with organ tuner Jan Börjeson, Malone spent hours listening to the instrument’s single notes, imagining new ways to conceptualize archaic compositional forms and canons. The album features nearly two hours of tracks performed on different organs, recorded with microphones placed close to the pipes to eliminate interference and capture every sound with academic rigor.
All Life Long is a collection of music for organ, choir, and brass quintet composed between 2020 and 2023. In this album, Kali Malone performs with American musician Stephen O’Malley on the historic organs of the Église Saint-François in Lausanne, the Orgelpark in Amsterdam, and the Malmö Konstmuseum in Sweden. The album title, that comes from a poem by Arthur Symons mentioned in W.E.B. Du Bois’ book The Souls of Black Folk, reflects the deeper meanings of Malone’s music, which brings the gravity and spirituality of liturgical chant to the present, inviting the listener to discover themselves within the interwoven musical patterns that resemble the passage of a lifetime.
“Organ” is the sixth collaboration between Fondazione Prada and Threes to combine sonic experimentation with the spatial and visual research of Flavin’s site-specific intervention. Since 2017, the Church of Santa Maria Annunciata in Chiesa Rossa has hosted concerts and performances by well-known and up-and-coming artists, such as William Basinski (2017), Charlemagne Palestine (2018), Ellen Arkbro (2021), Arvö Part (2019), Maria Horn (2022), FUJI|||||||||||TA (2023), Marta De Pascalis (2024), Tashi Wada with Julia Holter (2024), and Laraaji (2025).
