THE FIRE WITHIN: A REQUIEM FOR KATIA AND MAURICE KRAFFT
2022, 84’
Director: Werner Herzog
Country: UK, USA, France, Switzerland
Language: OV English with Italian subtitles
For twenty-five years, the French geologists and volcanologists Katia Conrad and Maurice Krafft traveled around the world to study, photograph, and film―under the most extreme conditions―the planet’s active volcanoes until their tragic deaths on June 3, 1991, caused by a pyroclastic flow down a side of Mount Unzen in Japan. During years of travel, the two researchers compiled an enormous body of unique and extremely beautiful images. His research in their archives enabled him to complete his documentary work on volcanoes, which he began in 1977 with La Soufrière<7em> and continued in 2016 with Into the Inferno. With deep empathy and admiration, Herzog honors the lives of these two great scientists, as much for their humanism as for their incredible work as image-makers.
