In April, #Soggettiva is dedicated to director, writer, screenwriter, and producer Jia Zhangke, a leading figure of the sixth generation of Chinese directors and winner of the Golden Lion at the 2006 Venice Film Festival with Still Life.

On Saturday, April 20, Jia Zhangke meets the Cinema Godard audience on the occasion of a masterclass, which is freely accessible upon reservation.

Presented in collaboration with FESCAAAL, the program traces the director’s career through a selection of movies, such as The Pickpocket (1997), Platform (2000), Unknown Pleasures (2002), The World (2004), Still Life (2006), 24 City (2008), A Touch of Sin (2013), winner of the Best Screenplay Award at the Cannes Film Festival, Ash Is Purest White (2018), and Mountains May Depart (2015), winner of the Asian Film Awards for the best screenplay.


BIOGRAPHY

Born in Fenyang, Shanxi, Jia Zhangke is considered the most prominent representative of the so-called “sixth generation” of Chinese filmmakers. A graduate of the Beijing Film Academy, he debuted with The Pickpocket, which was successfully screened at the 1997 Berlin Film Festival but censored in his homeland. Influenced by the French New Wave and the Italian neorealism, he directed, among others, films such as Platform (2000); Unknown Pleasures (2002); The World (2004); Still life (2006), Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival; 24 city (2008); A Touch of Sin (2013), award for best screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival; Mountains may depart presented in competition at the Festival of
Cannes in 2015.
