In November, #Soggettiva is dedicated to the work of French director and screenwriter Bertrand Bonello, with his creative exploration of the mechanisms of contemporary society through different cinematic codes.
On Saturday, November 2, Bonello was present on the occasion of the première of his last feature, The Beast (2023).
Selected in competition at the Venice Film Festival in 2023, The Beast is freely inspired by Henry James’s short story The Beast in the Jungle, placing at the centre of a layered narrative structure a refined love story that, in different eras, becomes a mirror of the complex evolutions of gender relations. A hypnotic, powerful, original and highly intelligent film, starring a stunning Léa Seydoux and an excellent George MacKay.
BIOGRAFIA
Bertrand Bonello was born in Nice in 1968. His first feature film, Something Organic, was presented at the 1998 Berlin Film Festival in the Panorama section. In 2001 he directed The Pornographer, selected at the Cannes Film Festival’s Critics Week, where he won the FIPRESCI prize; this was followed in 2003 by Tiresia, in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, and in 2008 by On War. In 2011 he made House of Tolerance, which again competed at the Cannes Film Festival and received eight nominations for the César Awards. Saint Laurent represented France at the Oscars in 2015 and received ten César nominations. In 2016, he released his seventh feature film, Nocturama. In 2019, he returned to the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival with Zombi Child. In 2022, Coma was selected in competition at the Berlin Film Festival for the Encounters selection and received the FIPRESCI award. His latest film, The Beast, is presented in competition at the Venice Film Festival in 2023.
