BIOGRAPHY
Director, screenwriter, and producer Dario Argento is one of the most emblematic figures of Italian cinema. After making his debut as a screenwriter (Once Upon a Time in the West, Sergio Leone, 1968), he became a director with his revolutionary thriller The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970), the first film in his Animal Trilogy—which he completed in 1971 with his two films The Cat o’ Nine Tails and Four Flies on Grey Velvet. In 1975 he made Deep Red, a visionary thriller that heralded his move into the horror genre with his Three Mothers trilogy: Suspiria (1977), a cult film, Inferno (1980), and La terza madre (2007). In 1982 he returned to thrillers with Tenebre, one of his most theoretical and personal films. Some of his most important films from 1985 onwards were Phenomena (1985), Opera (1987), Trauma (1992), La sindrome di Stendhal (1996), Il fantasma dell’Opera (1998), Sleepless (2001), Il Cartaio (2004), Giallo (2009), Giallo/Argento (2011), Dracula 3D (2012), and Dark Glasses, presented at the Berlin Film Festival in 2022. In 2019 he was awarded a David di Donatello for lifetime achievement.
