#Soggettiva is the monthly spotlights on film directors, which in January is dedicated to the fascinating filmography of Michelangelo Frammartino.

BIOGRAPHY

Michelangelo Frammartino was born in Milan in 1968. After studying architecture at Milan Polytechnic, he enrolled at the Civica Scuola di Cinema Luchino Visconti, where he devised video installations influenced by the artistic research of Studio Azzurro.
His big-screen debut in 2003 was the feature film The Gift. Premiered at the Locarno Film Festival, it won the Grand Prix at the Annecy Festival and the Jury Prize in Thessaloniki and Warsaw. In 2010 he directed Le Quattro Volte, which won broad critical acclaim, the “Coup de coeur” at the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes, and Europa Cinemas’ Label Award for Best European Film. In 2013 he premiered the installation Alberi [Trees] at MoMA PS1, and in 2021 returned to the big screen with Il buco [The hole], an epic and evocative film set on the border between Calabria and Basilicata, with which he won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival.
